How to create your myGov account and link it to the ATO (step by step)
If you’re ready to lodge your Tax Return in Australia, the first step is to create a myGov account and link it to the ATO (Australian Taxation Office). Here is a clear and simple guide to help you do it correctly.
Step 1: Create your myGov account
1. Go to the official website: my.gov.au
2. Click on “Create account” and follow the instructions.
3. Enter your personal details: name, email address and phone number.
4. Confirm your email and verify your account so you can sign in.
We recommend using an email address you’ll have long-term access to, even after leaving Australia.
Step 2: Request a Linking Code from the ATO
To view your tax information and lodge your Tax Return, you must link your myGov account to the ATO. The first time, you will need a Linking Code that the ATO gives you over the phone.
ATO contact numbers within Australia:
- General enquiries: 13 28 61
- Translating and Interpreting Service: 13 14 50
If calling from overseas:
- International ATO number: +61 3 9268 8332
During the call, they will ask you questions to verify your identity. Have details ready such as your full name, TFN, the address where you lived in Australia, and other personal information. Once verified, they will give you a Linking Code which must be used within 24 hours.
Step 3: Link your myGov account to the ATO
Once you have your Linking Code:
- Sign in to your myGov account.
- Go to the “Link a service” section.
- Select Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
- Enter the Linking Code you received over the phone.
If everything is correct, your myGov account will be linked to the ATO and you will see your dashboard with tax information, lodged returns, letters, and notifications.
Important tips
- Call with enough time: waiting times can be long, especially in July.
- Write down the Linking Code: you only have 24 hours to use it.
- Have your details ready: passport, TFN, address, and other data may be required for identity verification.
Once your myGov account is linked to the ATO, it becomes much easier to manage your Tax Return, view your Notice of Assessment, and stay on top of your tax obligations in Australia.
