If you’re ready to lodge your Tax Return in Australia, the first step is creating a myGov account and linking it to ATO services. Below you’ll find the full step-by-step process (including phone numbers and practical tips).

1 Step 1: Create your myGov account
- Go to the official website: my.gov.au
- Follow the prompts to register your personal account.
- You’ll need to provide basic details such as your name, email address, and phone number.
- Once your account is created, log in to continue with the process.
2 Step 2: Request a Linking Code from the ATO
- To lodge a tax return, you must link your myGov account to ATO services.
- You’ll need to call the ATO and request a Linking Code (required the first time).
- Once you receive it, you’ll have 24 hours to use it.
- They’ll ask questions to confirm your identity (for example: full name, TFN, previous address, etc.).

3 Step 3: Link your account to the ATO
- With your Linking Code, log in to your myGov account.
- Select the option to link a new service and choose the ATO.
- Enter the Linking Code you were given over the phone.
Key tips
- Call with time to spare: wait times can be long at peak times.
- Write the Linking Code down: you only have 24h to use it (otherwise you’ll need a new one).
- Have your details ready: the ATO may ask for extra information to verify your identity.
