Work and Holiday Maker Taxes in Australia: What You Need to Know

If you’ve decided to come to Australia to work on a Work and Holiday visa, it’s important to understand how to pay your taxes based on the income you receive during the financial year. In this article, we’ll explain all the details.

When am I considered a Work and Holiday Maker?

You are considered a Work and Holiday Maker if you hold one of the following visa subclasses:
– 417 – Working Holiday
– 462 – Work and Holiday
Important: If you obtained a bridging visa (such as a Covid visa or any other Bridging Visa) after having a Work and Holiday visa, you will be taxed as a WHM (Working Holiday Maker).

What taxes do I have to pay?

Income Brackets and Tax Rates for Work and Holiday Makers:
As shown in the table, if during the entire financial year—which starts on July 1 and ends on June 30—you earn less than $45,000, you’ll need to pay 15% of your total income in taxes. If you exceed the $45,000 threshold, you’ll pay 15% on the first $45,000 (which amounts to $6,750) and then 30% on every dollar above that amount. This pattern continues for each income bracket, as detailed in the following table.

Important: If you are from a country with a Non-Discrimination Article (NDA), you will be considered a resident for tax purposes instead of a Work and Holiday Maker. Countries that have an NDA include:

  • Chile
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Norway
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom

Once you’ve confirmed your status as a Work and Holiday Maker, the next step is to understand how your taxes are calculated. This will depend on the level of income you earn during the financial year.

Advice: If you are in Australia on a Work and Holiday Visa, it’s crucial to understand your tax obligations. Make sure you meet all the requirements and calculate your taxes correctly to avoid any unexpected debts when filing your Tax Return.
