Complete guide to managing your taxes and Superannuation before leaving Australia

Discover how to manage your Tax Return and superannuation when leaving Australia. A practical guide with key steps and useful tips to handle your paperwork from abroad.

When you decide to leave Australia, it’s essential to properly manage your tax matters to avoid future issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to prepare for accessing MyGov and your superannuation from abroad.

  • Preparing to file your Tax Return from outside Australia.
  • Download your Notice of Assessment.
  • How to manage your Superannuation.
  • Personal information check

Step 1: Preparing to file your Tax Return from outside Australia

The MyGov portal is crucial for managing your tax return. However, one of the main challenges when abroad is receiving the authentication code via SMS.
Solution: Before traveling, download the MyGov Code Generator app, which generates alternative access codes. This will enable you to log in without receiving an SMS, ensuring you can manage your taxes from anywhere.

Step 2: Download your Notice of Assessment

Your Notice of Assessment is key to maintaining your tax records, especially for filing your tax return from abroad. Here’s how to obtain it:

1. Log in at my.gov.au through your browser.
2. In the available services, select the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
3. Click on the menu and navigate to Tax > Lodgments > Income Tax > History.
4. Download the Notice of Assessment in PDF format.

Important: If you only have the original document, download that version. If you’ve made any amendments, ensure you download the updated notice.
Keep this document to properly manage your tax return from outside Australia.

Step 3: How to manage your Superannuation

– Access to superannuation from abroad.
Even if you withdraw your superannuation, you can always return to work in Australia. To withdraw it when the time comes, ensure you meet these basic requirements:
1. Have an active superannuation account.
2. Have your visa canceled for more than 20 days.
3. Have left Australia with no plans to return in the short term.

Additionally, you’ll need the following documents, which are ideal to prepare before leaving the country:
– Two certified copies of your passport. While the most recommended place is an Australian Peace Commissioner, you can also obtain them at one of the following places: police station, public library, Australian consulate, among others. The certified passport photocopy must be notarized in English and must follow these requirements:

For identification documents to be acceptable, each copy must be certified by an authorized certifier. The certifier must include the following information on each document:
1. Certifier’s full name in print (e.g., Michelle Helena).
2. Date of document certification.
3. Signature of the authorized certifier.
4. Capacity in which they certify the document (e.g., police officer, etc.).
5. Certifier’s registration number (if applicable).
6. Certification text.
7. For a single document: The text should say: “This is to certify this is a true copy of the original which I have sighted.”
8. For multi-page documents: The text should say: “I certify that this and the following (number of pages) are a true copy of the original which I have sighted.”
Additionally, each subsequent page must be initialed and dated by the certifier.

This procedure ensures that copies of identity documents are properly certified and accepted by the relevant authorities.
– Two copies of your bank statement from your Australian bank (showing your name, BSB, and account number), which you can download from your bank’s website or app.

Step 4: Personal information check

To ensure the correct management and withdrawal of your superannuation, it is essential that your FULL NAME matches exactly in the following locations:

– ATO account (Australian Taxation Office): This information is displayed in each user’s personal profile.
– Superannuation account/s: Depending on the provider, these details should also be available in the user’s profile.

How should your name appear?
Exactly as it appears in your passport, using the same format – First name, middle name (if applicable), and surname/s.
What happens if they don’t match?
It can make it impossible to recover your money.

Tip: Keep a copy of each document with you and leave another copy with a trusted person in Australia. This will make it easier to send the documents in case the superannuation fund requests them by postal mail.
Before leaving Australia, make sure that all your profiles (ATO and superannuation) are correctly updated with your name identical to the one in your passport.
