How to create your MyGov account and link it to the ATO: Step-by-step guide

If you’re ready to file your Tax Return in Australia, the first step is to create an account on my.gov.au. The process is simple but requires following specific steps to link your account with the services of the ATO (Australian Taxation Office). Here’s how to do it correctly:

Step 1: Create your MyGov account

  • Visit the official website: my.gov.au.
  • Follow the instructions to register your personal account.
  • You’ll need to provide basic information such as your name, email address, and phone number.
  • Once created, log in to your account to continue with the process.

Step 2: Request a Linking Code from the ATO

  • It is necessary to link your MyGov account with the ATO services to lodge your tax return.
  • To do this, you must call the ATO by phone and request a Linking Code. This code is mandatory the first time you complete the process, and you will have 24 hours to use it after receiving it.
  • They will ask for personal information to verify your identity, such as your full name, your TFN, an address where you have lived, etc.

  • Operating hours:
    – Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
    – Saturday: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
    (Hours may vary depending on demand, and wait times are often long, so be prepared to wait at least 20 minutes).

Step 3: Link your account with the ATO

  1. Once you receive the Linking Code, log in to your MyGov account.
  2. Select the option to link a new service and choose the ATO as the service.
  3. Enter the Linking Code provided over the phone.

Important tips:
– Call with plenty of time: Wait times can be long, especially during peak hours.
– Write down the Linking Code: Remember, you only have 24 hours to use it. If you don’t, you’ll need to call again to get a new code.
– Be ready for questions: The ATO may ask for additional information to verify your identity. Have your personal and tax documents handy.
