How Tax Residents pay taxes in Australia: A complete guide

How Tax Residents pay taxes in Australia: A complete guide

  • Australia, Residents, Tax Rates, Taxes
  • 0 Comments

Here we explain how you should pay taxes based on your income during the financial year. Additionally, find out if you meet the requirements to be this type of taxpayer.

IIf you have worked legally in Australia with a visa or work permit, the first question to ask yourself is:

Am I a tax resident in Australia?

To answer this question, we must take into account several requirements:

  • You have always lived in Australia, or you came later but were granted a permanent resident visa.
  • You came to Australia, or while being here, you were granted a different visa than a Work and Holiday (this includes Covid Visa and Nil-back obtained after a Work & Holiday).

The types of visas are

– Student
– Postgraduate
– Sponsor
– Skill
– Partner (of someone who obtains tax residency status)

Once we confirm that you are a tax resident, we can move to the next question

What taxes do I need to pay?

Income brackets and tax rates:
As you can see in the table, if you are a tax resident and during the financial year you earn less than $18,200, any taxes you have paid will be refunded, as your income up to that amount is tax-free. Once you exceed this amount, you will start paying 16% on every dollar above $18,200 and up to $45,000. After surpassing the second threshold, you will need to pay the corresponding amount based on the previous scale, $4,288 plus 30% of the amount above $45,000, and this continues for each interval shown in the following table.

The next step is to understand how your taxes are calculated. This will depend on the level of income you generate during the fiscal year.

Advice: If you are a tax resident in Australia, it is important to understand your tax obligations based on your income brackets. Make sure you meet the residency requirements and calculate your taxes correctly to avoid potential debts when filing your Tax Return.
