Tax Return: What It Is & Why It Matters

Tax Return: What It Is & Why It Matters

The Tax Return is a mandatory process for all workers in Australia, including foreigners. In simple terms, it involves declaring your annual income and the taxes you’ve paid during the fiscal year (from July 1 to June 30). To help you understand it better, here’s everything you need to know to comply with this process:

Who must file a tax return?

Generally speaking, all workers in Australia who generate income are required to file a tax return, including those under a temporary work visa.

Important: However, keep in mind that, if your total income is below the tax threshold, you may not have to pay taxes. Nonetheless, you are still required to file your return.

Necessary documents

To file your tax return, you’ll need:
1. Tax File Number (TFN): This number identifies taxpayers in the Australian tax system. You should apply for it upon arrival in Australia and keep a copy of the TFN letter, either physical or digital.
2. Payment summary (PAYG): Issued by your employer, this document shows your income and the taxes withheld.
3. Receipts and invoices: If you wish to claim deductions, keep proof of work-related expenses, such as uniforms, tools, or courses.
4. Australian bank account details: To receive any refund directly into your account.

Important deadlines for filing

Australian financial year: Begins on July 1 and ends on June 30.
Tax return filing period: You can start filing your tax return from July 1st; however, the deadline is October 31st. If you do it with a registered tax agent, you might obtain an extension to file your return.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
If you don’t file your tax return by October 31st, you can still do so after the deadline, but it’s important to act quickly.
– Risk of penalties: Delaying too long can result in punishments. The penalty depends on how late you are and the amount of taxes owed.
– Minimize consequences: File your tax return as soon as possible to reduce or avoid additional penalties.
Although missing the deadline isn’t ideal, the Australian tax system allows for these situations, and the sooner you act, the fewer the consequences.

How to file the tax return?

There are three different ways to file the return:
– Online: Through the MyGov portal, linked to the ATO (Australian Taxation Office).
– With a tax agent.
– By paper: Although less common, you can submit your return manually.

Useful tips:
– Keep all your documents: Save digital and physical copies of your receipts, payment summaries, and any other tax documents.
– Consult an expert: If you have questions about your tax situation or how to maximize your refund, seek professional help.
– Avoid Early Tax Return: Filing your return before the fiscal year ends can result in errors or smaller refunds.
